Keyboard Symbols - How to Make Special Characters on Your Computer Keyboard

Have you ever been writing a letter or an article and suddenly realised that you needed a special character that isn't on your keyboard?
One of the most common problems you might encounter is the need for accented characters, for example when you're spelling words from another language - such as resumé (as in CV). If you leave out the accent, then this is an English word which means to continue a previously interrupted activity - i.e. resume.
Keyboard Symbols - How to Create Accents

Fortunately, there is a simple way to add an accent to vowels in this way. All you need to do is hold down the Control and Alt keys, and then press the key for the vowel you want to be accented.
So, to create á, you simply press the Ctrl, Alt and A keys together. Follow the same procedure for the other vowels to create é, í, ó and ú.

Keyboard Symbols - Inserting Special Characters

A variety of special characters, such as the copyright symbol ©, can be quickly created in a similar way by using the numeric keypad. All you have to do is hold down the Alt key, type in a four-digit code and then release the Alt key again.
These codes will only work if you use the numeric keypad - they don't work with the numbers at the top of the keyboard. Here is a list of some of the most commonly requested keyboard symbols and their codes:
    Keyboard Symbol Codes

    Copyright (©) - 0, 1, 6, 9
    Trademark (TM) - 0, 1, 5, 3
    Registered (®) - 0, 1, 7, 4
    Bullet - 0, 1, 4, 9
    "en" Dash - 0, 1, 5, 0
    "em" Dash - 0, 1, 5, 1
    Pound (£) - 1, 6, 3
    Euro - 0, 1, 2, 8
    Cents (¢) - 0, 1, 6, 2
    One-half (½) - 0, 1, 8, 9

If you want to create the Euro symbol on your keyboard, you can try pressing Ctrl+Alt+4 - using the 4 directly above your QWERTY keyboard, not the one on the keypad.

Alternatively, you can pull up the Character Map application (Start>Programs>Accessories>System) and copy it from there.
